In Which Adena Learns a Lesson

I wrote a story yesterday. It started with a dream–a dream that stayed in my head and pestered me until it became a short story. My Master has posted it for you here and I’d love it if you go and read it.

 

Just after I finished writing it, I picked up a book I’m reading, Exit to Eden. It’s Anne Rice, writing under her pseudonym, Anne Rampling. Just a few pages in, a paragraph jumped off the page at me. It says that a good fantasy has both consent and coercion–a struggle between the part of you that wants it, and the part of you that doesn’t. And in the end, the ultimate degradation is that you consent…and grow to like it. And I’ve been thinking about how writing the story was, for me, a little reflection on that theme.

 

It’s hard for me to tell if what I write is any good. I just know what I need to write. I’ve sort of got this idea in my head that there will be more “lessons.” I hope you’ll let me know what you think, and maybe your thoughts will guide me when I write the next one.

You all might noticed I have switched  my girl’s blog to  WordPress after I had Moveable Type  Blog system for long time… when I decide to try wordpress  with one of my domains  and I saw it was easier for me to update or add plug ins or  changing themes, etc  and I started to like it and I switched her blog over to WordPress and the transition was smooth  to get everything, posts,  comments frim disqus, etc over to wordpress…

His, and what that means

I need to make one thing perfectly clear, and that is this: If I am with my Jarl, and you want something of me, you’d better ask it directly of him and not of me. I will not ask him to unleash me so I can go and serve you and your guests. I won’t climb off his lap to fetch your paga.

This does not make me a princess, or poorly-trained, or stupid. My Jarl has my undivided attention and it is his business to command me to serve, or not, according to his wishes. He will decide if what you want is more important than whatever he has me doing, even if I appear to you to be doing nothing. If you thought-emote snarky remarks about my manners I will probably treat them as if you said them aloud. Isn’t it interesting how it’s always the women with the passive-aggressive comments?

On the other hand, if I am not with him, and I’m sitting on my ass, then I’m sure he wants to know of it, because I am a slave and I serve all Free equally after my Jarl. He’s placed no restrictions on me and if in any way I fail to please, you can punish me accordingly.

Yes, I’m often asked this question. Anyone who knows me knows that I love and am devoted to my Jarl, who has owned my heart and soul–and body–for many years. So how do I cope with being unrestricted when it seems so antithetical to a “normal” loving relationship as most of us understand it? Here’s what it is… I trust him to use his best judgment in everything that concerns me. It makes me happy to please him. It excites me when he exercises his right to make these decisions. And it reminds me of my place as his slut, not his girlfriend or his wife.

On the flip side, my unrestricted status means I can’t say no. Have I used it to my advantage? Yes. I confess to being a slutty slut. I’m flirtatious, and I love to please Masters. I believe that slaves are entirely sensual and sexual beings, and as long as it pleases my Jarl to keep my body unrestricted, I’m going to fully express that. Does it diminish my love for my Jarl? No, I have to say that it does not.

It’s no doubt true that men and women in this society are not usually built to “share.” Heaven knows it’s caused me heartache more than once. When it comes right down to it, he doesn’t send me off to a new set of furs every night for the fun of it, and in fact, it’s very rare that someone asks. But it’s the knowing that he will, if he chooses, that keeps me mindful of my status as his slave, and kindles the fire in my belly.

Death in Gor — Slave version

What constitutes a “valid” reason to kill a slave? Any slave who is not fully pleasing to the Free, whether intentionally or inadvertently, risks death. And besides the general rule that slaves are wholly at the mercy of the Free, there are several specific offenses described as punishable by death, among them failing to kneel in the presence of a Free man, using a weapon to harm a Free person, and dressing in the garments of a Free woman. In effect, I think slaves have no basis to call “invalid” over a killing in RP, if they have been deemed less than entirely pleasing by any Free person.

“Any free man may discipline an insolent or errant slave,” I said, “even one who is the least bit displeasing, even one he might merely feel like disciplining. If she is killed, or injured, he need only pay compensation to her master, and that only if the master can be located within a specific amount of time and requests such compensation.” In virtue of such customs and statutes the perfect discipline under which Gorean slaves are kept is maintained and guaranteed even when they are not within the direct purview of their masters or their appointed agents. –Players, p. 235

Gor, on the face of it, is brutal. Goreans, by and large, are not a hospitable lot towards those who do not share their Home Stone. However, there is a rule of law and the Codes keep indiscriminate killing under some semblance of control. It’s not just wholesale bloodshed. Even a person whose life is forfeit by law is often pardoned as a matter of honor. Still, the simple act of raising a weapon against a Warrior entitles him to kill you in return, and a Free person vanquished in battle would likely face a grim, and brief, future.

“…in the Gorean language, the word for stranger is the same as the word for enemy.” Tarnsman, p. 110

“…the first thing a Gorean warrior is likely to do to the stranger in his tent is kill him, the second is to find out who he is.” Tarnsman, p. 167

“Impaling the stranger is a not unusual form of hospitality on Gor.” Tarnsman, p. 111

” ‘You have lifted a weapon against me,’ he said. ‘My codes permit me to kill you.’ ” Outlaw, p. 14

“I took no note of the raised staff. I could, of course, at that point, have killed him. My codes permitted it.” Magicians, p. 41

“I was not certain, really, of the responses of Marcus. He was not a fellow of Earth, but a Gorean. Too, he was of the Warriors, and his codes, in a situation of this sort, their weapons drawn, entitled him, even encouraged him, to attack, and kill.”  Magicians, p. 169

There are also several examples of capital punishment for a variety of crimes. Impalement is a popular one for civil offenses such as an attack upon the Home Stone of a city. The frame of humiliation, tarn death, being staked out and trampled by a herd of bosk…and the insidious Flame Death for those who rile the Priest Kings.

” …to enter a city without permission or without satisfactory reason is tantamount to a capital crime, and the punishment is usually a swift and brutal impalement. Pikes on the walls of Gorean cities are often surmounted with the remains of unwelcome guests.” Outlaw, p. 49

“The death would not be a pleasant one. Bound helplessly, without food or water, my own body would torture me by its weight dragging on the hand and ankle ropes, suspended a few inches above the rolling, muddy surface under the firey sun. I knew that I would not, some days hence, reach the delta of the Vosk and the cities in the delta except perhaps as a bound corpse, withered by exposure and the lack of water. Indeed, it was unlikely my body would reach the delta at all. It was far more likely that one of the water lizards of the Vosk or one of the great hook-beaked turtles of the river would seize my body and drag it and the frame under the water, destroying me in the mud below. There was also the chance that a wild tarn might swoop down and feed on the helpless living morsel fastened to that degrading frame. Of one thing I was certain – there would be no human assistance or even pity, for the poor wretches on the frames are none but villains, betrayers and blasphemers against the Priest-Kings, and it is a sacrilegious act even to consider terminating their sufferings.” Tarnsman, pp. 138-139

” ‘Yes,’ he said. ‘It is Flame Death merely to possess a weapon of the interdicted sort. Sometimes bold individuals create or acquire such war materials and sometimes for as long as a year escape the Flame Death, but sooner or later they are struck down.’ ” Tarnsman, p. 31

Relating this to our roleplay in SL, I think it’s fair to say that any killing of an enemy taken in battle or in an assault on a city–one who had “raised a weapon” against his captor–would be “valid” by the book. I don’t think you have much of an argument against it.

Capital punishment for criminal offenses, on the other hand, is subject to the rule of law. There would likely be some sort of trial and adjudication, whether before a Magistrate, an Ubar in a city under martial law, or a Council of Initiates. And *then* you’d end up dead.

Unless you are the reincarnation of Tarl Cabot–the original Gorean godmodder–in which case you can wriggle or wheedle your way out of any dire situation. *grins*

Or do you grab her by the hair and bend her over and fuck her?? She’s your sex slave, ffs….Not your maid. Well…I take that back. She’s your maid, too, but she can scrub floors on her own time. *giggles*

Yes, I realize that I am being a bit glib when I say that your boredom is of your own making. But think about this: Why did you come here? Are you here to put your own gratification first? Or are you here to serve and play a slave? I’m not saying your experience should be devoid of pleasure. I’m saying that there’s great pleasure to be found in using your imagination to become what he desires…his hot and willing slave.

We spend a lot of time, energy and lindens on creating avatars to be desired by men. We deck our pixel selves in the hottest clothes and the sexiest animations. Once we’ve given Masters a whiff of the bait, why would we then deny them the prize that they crave? There’s something not right about saying to a horny Master, “No, I don’t want to do that. We did that yesterday. You need to think of something else to entertain me.” I think being “bored” with sex in Gor is a symptom of a lack of interest in your purpose here…that is, to entice and please him.

I understand that “bumping pixels” is not terribly satisfying. But it’s not about what your avatar is doing on the screen. It’s all about what goes on in your mind, and where you can take your partner with your words and your imagination. It’s only boring if you don’t put anything into it.

Slaves are wholly sexual creatures. Read any page in any of the Gor books and you’ll see, over and over. Slaves exude desire from every pore, in their movement, their manner of speech, their appearance, their words, even in their thoughts. And Gorean Masters grab hold of that and enjoy it to its fullest. A Gorean man wants to live larger than life, and owning a delicious little animal on which to slake his lust is part of his vibrant and tumultuous existence. If he wants a dried-up husk of a female, let him get a Free Companion. If he wants *you,* rejoice, and take pleasure in his passion.

Oh No! My Ears!

My Jarl instructed me to talk to you today of ‘onlinisms,’ that is, those little quirks of online Gor that have no basis in the Gor books, yet somehow manage to persist in our roleplay. Now, there are quite a few such things that spring to mind, but I’m going to take a shot at the ones that I find most glaring.

1) Servery

Now, this is sort of an interesting one, because the word itself, as far as I know, does not appear in the books. Throughout the books, ‘kitchen‘ is used. Yet the word ‘servery’ is certainly an appropriate word and used in online Gor to mean exactly what it is, that is, a room or rooms adjoining a dining room from which meals and liquors are served and in which utensils are kept, or a piece of furniture for the same purpose. ‘Servery’ is not use

d much in the US. My guess is that somewhere along the line, someone used the word in an online environment thinking it sounded all nice and medievalish, and it stuck. And now slaves use it religiously.

“The girl nodded and, rising gracefully, backing away a step or two, head down, turned and went to the kitchen.” –Assassin of Gor, p. 106

“‘Do not afflict her so,’ said Telima to me. ‘Go to the kitchen,’ said I, ‘Kettle Slave.’ Telima turned and, in the stained tunic of rep-cloth, left the room, as she had been commanded.” –Raiders of Gor, p. 116

So if we can agree that ‘kitchen’ is just as good a word, and not sneer at slaves who use it in roleplay, then I can be flexible on the word ‘servery,’ and resist the urge to run to the kitchen to gouge it out of my ear with a paring knife every time I hear it.

2) Chilla

I can grant no such exception for the online abomination, ‘chilla.’ It’s wrong on so many levels. If you must keep things cold in Gor, use your imagination. Try a block of ice in the storeroom, a hole in the ground, or even an ice chest will do if your Master is wealthy. But please, oh please, do not let the non-existent word ‘chilla’ pass your lips.

“I brought up from the kitchen, where I had been keeping it hot, a vessel of black wine, with sugars, and cups and spoons. Too, I had brought up a small bowl of powdered bosk milk. We had finished the creams last night and, in any event, it was unlikely they would have lasted the night. If I had wanted creams I would have had to have gone to the market. My house, incidentally, like most Gorean houses, had no ice chest. There is little cold storage on Gor. Generally food is preserved by being dried or salted. Some cold storage, of course, does exist. Ice is cut from ponds in the winter, and then stored in ice houses, under sawdust. One may go to the ice houses for it, or have it delivered in ice wagons. Most Goreans, of course, cannot afford the luxury of ice in the summer.” –Guardsman of Gor, p. 295

Lo and behold! Powdered bosk milk! If you will swear to me that you will never again utter the word ‘chilla,’ I will let you keep your ‘servery.’ (You caught the milk pun there, right?)

3) Formulaic “ten-step” service

I started to think about this one…and then decided that it’s a topic for its own post. All I ask is that you, please, use your imagination in your service. Yes, there are book passages that describe slave training in drink service that you can follow. But those passages should be as a guide, not a script. More on that later.

Also, you serve him. You are serving. You are offering service. You are not “doing a serve.”

4) Tallies

Did you feel that? That was my Jarl twitching when I used the bubbly little ‘tallies’ in lieu of ‘tal.’ Let’s own up. I can find not a single instance of anyone using the perky ‘tallies’ to address one another in the books. But ‘Tal’ is just so sonorous and somber, and by itself doesn’t seem to be the sort of cheerful greeting among friends that ‘tallies’ expresses.

To save my beloved Jarl from an aneurysm, I will promise not to use ‘tallies’ in roleplay. As long as he concedes that every ‘tal’ is going to be modified by a giggle or a smile.

5) Idle, kneeling slaves

Why, oh why, are the cities full of slaves sitting on their heels with their hands idle? Are you bored? Waiting for roleplay to come your way? Let me offer some advice: Stand up. Now go find something to do. I do understand that many people object to roleplaying to an empty room, “notecarding” endless chores. But if there’s really no one to interact with, better to be prepared with even just one line of roleplay that suggests you were busy. Something along the lines of, “seeing his shadow fall, she wipes her wet and soapy hands and turns, falling to her knees at his feet, abandoning the dishes.”

Even if you are simply chatting with other slaves, stand up! Look lively! And then when the Free address you, go to your knees. I guarantee you that any man would much rather watch you sink to your knees in the presence of his magnificence than see you from across the town square idling on your lovely rump.

I write about this quote today for two entirely different reasons. First, I am tired of arrogant slaves who smirk and criticize me in passive-aggressive little thought-emotes when I am quietly at the feet of my Jarl. Because in their arrogance and desire to prove their “superior” knowledge, they are really questioning my Jarl’s wish to simply enjoy his slave in the manner that pleases him. If he wants me to be running around scrubbing pots and splitting logs, then he has no qualms about commanding me to do so. But what does he really want when he comes here? It seems he wants the softness of a cheek pressed against his thigh, the peace of a gentle voice whispering in his ear, the pleasure of skillful fingers caressing him. He fully expects, and gets, my undivided attention when he is here…tasks out of the way, and nothing but his pleasure in mind. Haughty slaves who think they know better than my Jarl how he should handle his property….? I have no patience for them anymore.

 

On the other hand, and this brings me to my second reason for writing on this today, my heart thrills to the idea of taking care of my Jarl by performing all those humble little domestic tasks…cooking for him, keeping his home, washing his clothes…and every day carries me a step closer. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the simple pleasures of taking care of someone you love. I’m looking forward to a time when I can do that for my Jarl. Words are all good…you can say you’re in love, but nothing shows it like the depth of your actions. To me, providing for your loved one’s happiness with the labor of your hands is the sweetest way to demonstrate your love.

 

And then, when he wishes it, to sit by his feet, his loving, vital companion…to tempt him with sweet pleasures and exotic treats in his bed…to be his marvelous slave.
